I have been working for years in one aspect or another of design and marketing - most of it paid, but several years as a volunteer for the non-profit organization, Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation. During this time I have become a member of NAPP, trained at SBCC and UCSB, maintained my skills through the Lynda.com learning resource center, SEOMoz, and expos like SMX Advanced 2009 in Seattle, WA.

I am currently working full-time as the Web Marketing Specialist at Veeco Instruments, Inc. and had previously worked for over 5 years as the Internet Marketing Supervisor at Moss Motors, Ltd. Since I love what I do, it is easy enough for me to spend time researching, creating and learning all aspects of design and marketing. I live in Santa Barbara with my wife, our 3 cats, 2 maltese dogs and 3 fish. My elder mother now lives with us as well.
Powercom Data and Voice had a print ad to be used in a trade magazine for their services.
Looking for a more clean look that would incorporate a specific sense of movement and design that would be easily interpreted as being related to data handling and voice services. It would be required to insert the Sprint logo into the design, but not hand over the corporate identity of the ad entirely to the giant.
The final version here was used in late Spring 2009 issue of one of their trade magazines.
Kyoto's owners wanted a site that would allow them to convey the same authentic Japanese feel as their food and service. In addition, they wanted a blog that would allow for posting of images, coupons, special event notices and so on - all through a simple CMS tool.
I created a custom designed template for WordPress (a freeware blog application that has a superb online support and community) that we integrated seemlessly into their static html site.
A half page ad for Powercom Data And Voice that appeared in the 2009 Santa Barbara International Film Festival Program Guide Book.
The client wanted a "bold, attention-grabbing" ad that included copy highlighting many aspects of their business services. I designed it to allow the ad grab and hold the eye, thus drawing the viewer into the more subtle aspects that could have otherwise been too overwhelming.
This site is a major improvement over the previous site and it includes an integrated appointment calendar, facts about each of the vehicle manufacturers that Clark Motors services and an external blog for social media marketing.
It was decided to use Google Calendar since the application itself is optimized and updated by Google to work on all platforms and devices. It also allows features to connect it to a cell phone for easy notification of people wanting to schedule an appointment.
Another note, I had the pleasure of designing his current logo several years previously.
This site is essentially a custom built XML-driven Flash gallery.
The original site was based on a commercial gallery application design that did not allow for any sort of management by the owner since she did not have the proper app.
Since the gallery is database-driven, uploading images is now quick and easy (as is deleting outdated images) and could easily be done by the site owner.
The look is clean and modern, but the images are fast-loading, even on a dial-up connection, since a lot of the flash draws from a simple XML database.

This is likely the simplest web design job I have ever done. I include it because this is an example of a job that never was completed as much as I would like it to have been. I had emailed the owner and said that my co-workers and I had wanted to go to his restaurant, but without an online menu, it was hard to say whether it really was how we wanted to spend our very limited lunch time.
Amazingly enough, I bartered a dinner and drinks for the wife and I to at least make it easy for people to see his menu and map to his location.
I hope one day that the owner will want to expand the site to incorporate a better marketing strategy and design.
